Today I noticed that at all PowerPivot workbooks on my machine started to crash on opening.

When I opened workbook with PowerPivot few seconds later I saw that SQLDumper.exe started with message:

unable to open file \\?\c:\Program Files\Microsoft Analysis Services\AS OLEDB\10\FlightRecorderCurrent.trc, error2

Then I saw another error message popup:

Microsoft PowerPivot Engine has stopped working

And then final error:

Unable to load the Vertipaq engine

============================

I had few things happen to my PC since I was able to work with my PowerPivot workbooks without problems:

  • My machine has SQL Server 2005 AND SQL Server 2008R2 tools installed. Last week I applied SQL Server 2005 SP4 and then SQL Server 2008R2 SP1 on this machine.
  • I updated Office 2010 with latest service pack.

Solution

I was able to fix this problem by simply un-installing PowerPivot and then installing it again.

More details

It appears that applying SQL Server service packs and/or Office services packs replaced some PowerPivot files. Here is the screenshot of the folder c:\Program Files\Microsoft Analysis Services\AS OLEDB\10

ssasfolder1

And here is the screenshot of the same folder after I reinstalled PowerPivot:

ssasfolder2

As you can see, files Microsoft.Data.DataFeedClient.dll and xmsrv.dll have different timestamp and I suspect that was causing PowerPivot corruption issue.

Follow up to my prior comment:
Finally was able to get PowerPivot re-installed. It would not do so unless I ran/installed it as an administrator.
This morning everything seems to be working fine.

I started getting the same message/errors yesterday. Today, I tried uninstalling and re-installing PowerPivot. Now, I am unable to re-install.
I get an error message that says "Setup is missing prerequisites: This add-in requires Excel 2010. If you have 32-bit Excel, you must install the 32-bit version of the add-in. If not, you must install the 64-bit version. This add-in requires that the Office Shared Features Component of Microsoft Office 2010 is installed. Go to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=168472" which takes me to a Microsoft page:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ceb4346f-657f-4d28-83f5-aae0c5c83d52&displaylang=en which is the following page:

Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008 R2 Feature Pack

I have verified that I am running 32bit Excel 2010, and verified that the Office Shared Features components are installed.

No luck - I get the same error message each time.

Any suggestions? I've uninstalled PowerPivot and now I can't get it back.
